Onion is a frequent staple in South Asian cooking, and India is its largest exporter in the world.

It seems South Asian countries are going to find a scarcity of onions very soon. The reason for this is, the Indian government has decided to stop the export of all varieties of onions recently.

According to the officials, the shortage of supply and rise of price in domestic retail markets are said to be the reasons. In Delhi alone, the price of onions rose to ₹35 to 40 in a span of a few days.

Besides, heavy rains and floods in Maharashtra have also affected the export of onions drastically. Also, excessive rainfall in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh damaged the summer-sown onion crop.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in a statement has disclosed that the export of all varieties on onions has been banned with immediate effect which includes cut, broken, sliced and powder form varieties. The ban also includes Bangalore Rose onions and Krishnapuram onions which are freely exported till now.

India is the largest exporter of the staple in South Asian countries.Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Nepal have been the top beneficiaries from Indian exports.
