A fire in Dhaka construction kills six

Dhaka 16 August : At six people have been killed when a fire destroyed a structure which was home to a restaurant as well as an industrial plant for plastics in Dhaka firefighters in the Bangladeshi capital confirmed.
The fire began to spread on the floor below of the three-storey building about noon on Monday, in Kamalbagh in the former area of the city.

the dpa news agency quoted firefighter Anwarul Islam as saying.

He said that the firefighters took over two hours to put out the flame, which then spread across the other floors and destroyed the entire structure while firefighters struggled to get to the an overcrowded area that is divided by narrow roads.

“We have discovered six bodies in the rubble,” Islam said.

The bodies discovered at the site of the accident are unrecognizable, he said adding two additional employees of the restaurant are missing.

The factory, which was used to make plastic toys was on the first level of the building, Firefighter Shahjahan Sikhder said, noting that two floors were used for storage of plastic products.

Fire-related deaths and industrial catastrophes are not uncommon in Bangladesh.

At at least 49 people were killed in an enormous fire that destroyed the container depot in Chittagong in June.

In the last year, nearly 40 persons were killed in a fire that was engulfed an passenger ferry in December.

In addition, 52 died when a fire engulfed workers in the Dhaka food processing plant in July.
