New Delhi, Aug 12 : A new study of American teens (ages 13-17) from the Pew Research Center has revealed an alarming trend for Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook as the proportion of teens using Facebook’s social media platforms has dropped from 71 percent in 2014-15 to only 32 percent as of today.
Chinese video streaming platform TikTok has exploded in its popularity and is currently the top social media platform for teenagers in Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat.

About 67 percent of teens say they’ve ever utilize TikTok, with 16 per percent of the teens saying that they frequently use it.

Google-owned YouTube is the top teen online world among the platforms, as it’s used by 95 percent of teens.

TikTok is the next one on the list of platforms that were questioned about in this survey (67 percent) The next two platforms are Instagram and Snapchat which are both used by six in 10 teens.

Then there’s Facebook with 32 percent and smaller shares of users who use Twitter, Twitch, WhatsApp, Reddit and Tumblr, the Pew Research Center survey found.

This is the primary reason Meta CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg has placed his efforts in making his platforms more like TikTok and Instagram Reels now has a higher annual revenue run-rate for advertising ($1 billion) than Instagram Stories or Facebook at the same times after launch.

“Changes in the social media landscape since 2014-15 go well beyond the rise of TikTok and its decline.

The increasing percentage of teens report engaging with Instagram as well as Snapchat since the time they were introduced.On the other hand, Twitter and Tumblr saw declines in the number of teens who use their services,” stated the report.

Two of the platforms that the Center monitored in the previous study, Vine and Google+ have ceased to exist.

“There are some distinct gender differences in teens’ social media preferences.

For instance, teens tend to be more likely than teenage girls to admit that they are using YouTube, Twitch and Reddit and teens tend to be more likely than boys to utilize TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat,” the findings showed.

In addition, higher percentages of Black and Hispanic teens say they use TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and WhatsApp when compared with White teenagers.

This study also looked at the frequency with teens using each of the five most popular online platforms: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.

“Fully 35 percent of teens say that they are engaged with at least one of them “almost daily”.

The teen TikTok as well as Snapchat users are particularly active with the platforms, with teen YouTube users in close proximity,” the survey showed.

One quarter of teens in the US who use Snapchat or TikTok say they use these apps nearly often and five percent of teens YouTube users agree.

When you look at teens as a whole 19 percent are saying they use YouTube frequently 16 percent are saying this about TikTok and 15 percent on Snapchat.

Since 2014-15, there’s been a 22 per cent increase in the percentage of teens who say they have access to smartphones (95 percent today and 73 per cent in the past).

“While teens smartphone use has increased in about the last eight years however, access to other electronic technology such as laptop or desktop computers, or gaming consoles has remained the same,” the report noted.
