San Francisco, Aug 17 : Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on Wednesday via Twitter that he is in the process of buying British soccer club Manchester United.Musk however, hasn’t revealed the amount he is paying to acquire the famous football team.
The club’s market cap of almost $2.08 billion.
“I’m purchasing Manchester United ur welcome,” Musk posted in a tweet.
However, it wasn’t immediately evident whether Musk was simply playing around or was really serious about the deal.
The American Glazer family is the owner of the club, and bought it for 790 million pounds in 2005.
The announcement was made while he was involved in an inflammatory tweet.
“To be certain, I am in favor of the left-hand side of the Republican Party and the right part of the Democratic Party!” he posted, prior to the US midterm elections in November.
Musk supporters have pleaded with for him to purchase Manchester United rather than Twitter in the past.
Manchester United Football Club, often referred to as Man United, or simply United is located in the Old Trafford area of Greater Manchester, England.
The club is in the Premier League, the top division in the English football league system.
Also known as the Red Devils, it was established with the name of Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878.However, it changed the name to Manchester United in 1902.
The club relocated from Newton Heath to its current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.
Manchester United have won a record 20 League titles and 12 FA Cups, five League Cups and an all-time record 21 FA Community Shields.
It’s among of the most well-supported football teams in the world.It has strong rivalries with Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal and Leeds United.
