Mark Margolis, a veteran character actor, passed away at the age of 83.He gained fame for his role as a mobster in “Scarface” and later became known for his compelling portrayal of the vindictive former drug kingpin, Hector “Tio” Salamanca, in the TV series “Breaking Bad.” Mark Margolis was nominated for an Emmy in 2012 for his outstanding guest actor performance in the show, using facial expressions and a barhop bell on his wheelchair to communicate as Hector couldn’t speak due to a stroke.

Mark drew inspiration from personal experience in caring for a relative who suffered a stroke while portraying the kingpin.

Apart from television, Margolis had a successful film career, frequently collaborating with director Darren Aronofsky in movies like “Requiem for a Dream,” “The Fountain,” “Noah,” “Black Swan,” “The Wrestler,” and “Pi.” However, his breakthrough role was as mobster Alberto “The Shadow” in 1983’s “Scarface” opposite Al Pacino.

Mark Margolis was born in Philadelphia in 1939 and studied acting under Stella Adler in New York City.

He dedicated much of his early career to the stage, performing in numerous off-Broadway shows and even founding a touring theater troupe called Blue Dome.

In addition to “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” Margolis appeared in various TV shows, including “The Equalizer,” “Oz,” “American Horror Story: Asylum,” “Crossing Jordan,” “Californication,” and “The Affair.” His latest TV role was in five episodes of Showtime’s “Your Honor” as a Mafia kingpin.

Mark Margolis leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Jacqueline Margolis, and his son Morgan, who serves as the CEO of Knitting Factory Entertainment.

The family plans to hold a private memorial and funeral to honor his memory.
