Shreegauri Sawant, also known as Gauri Sawant, is a well-known transgender activist born in Pune, India.She faced challenges early in life, losing her mother at the age of 7 and leaving home at 14 or 15 to avoid disappointing her police officer father.
For the unversed, Shreegauri is the director of Sakhi Charchowghi Trust.This trust is an NGO established for supporting transgender individuals and those affected by HIV/AIDS.
Her efforts extended to becoming the first transgender person to petition the Supreme Court of India for the adoption rights of transgender people.In 2008, she also fulfilled her wish to adopt a girl named Gayatri.
