Karnataka elections : Modi looking for fresh faces, status quo on BJP candidates list

The high command of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have reportedly expressed their concerns about the Karnataka BJP not being in sync with the ethos of the party.It was felt that an overhaul was needed to bring in fresh faces and ensure that the party’s aspirational goals were met.

PM Modi, along with Party President JP Nadda are said to be upset with the first list of candidates that was presented before them at the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting.The list was deemed to be a status quo, and the prime minister asked the party unit to take a relook at the list and come back with fresh faces and set some parameters, according to sources.

The prime minister insisted that the candidates selected should have no allegations of corruption against them.In addition, the central leadership felt candidates with a stay order on sex-tape cases are to be avoided, souces said.

The sources further said, BJP high command has instructed the Karnataka unit to drop 20 sitting MLAs from the list of candidates.The central committee of the BJP in Karnataka has chosen three candidates for each Assembly seat, according to party sources.

These candidates will be presented to the Central Election Committee.The top leadership of the party will then discuss these names before finalizing the nominees.

The Karnataka assembly elections are just a month away and the political atmosphere in the state is tense.The JD(S) has already released its first list of 93 candidates while the Congress has released two lists so far with 166 candidates.

However, the ruling BJP party has not released a single list so far.A few days back, an unofficial list of BJP candidates had been doing the rounds but the saffron party dubbed it fake.The official list will be out soon.

The Congress released its list just two days back and many BJP turncoats received tickets from the grand old party.

In its initial list of candidates, which the party unveiled last month, 124 names were included.Siddaramaiah will run from the Varuna district, and DK Shivakumar will be a candidate from Kanakapura.Congress leader B.K.Hariprasad has said that the party will release its third list after BJP releases its first.
