New Zealand food prices highest in 13 years

Wellington 13th September : Prices for food in New Zealand were 8.3 percent more in August year-on-year the highest increase in 13 years the country’s statistics department Stats NZ said on Tuesday.
This is the biggest year-on-year increase since the beginning of July when food prices grew by 8.4 percent, Stats NZ said.

The rise was due to increases across all the food categories analyzed with the highest rises being caused by vegetables and fruits grocery items restaurant meals, ready-to-eat food, in addition to poultry, meat and fish prices, Xinhua news agency reported the department’s statement.

“Increasing prices for yogurt, eggs, as well as cheddar cheese, were among the biggest factors in grocery food prices,” consumer prices manager Katrina Dewbery said in a statement.

The cost of food for the month was 1.1 percent higher in August when compared with July, Dewbery said, adding that a 4.1-per cent increase in prices for vegetables and fruits was the most significant factor.
