Bailey spoke to People during the D23 Expo about how the role changed her life, and the reason she was able to cry in tears after finishing the movie she had hoped to make, according to People.

“I’d definitely say that prior to this film, I was a bit more, I’d say, a little more young and than certain of myself as a person,” she says.

“The entire process of making films, in more ways than one, mirrored Ariel’s experience of finding her voice.”

“I remember that at the closing of filming closing day, I was crying because I felt like I’d been released of the cocoon with Ariel,” says Bailey.

“This story has been a huge help to me, and the process of filming has pretty much of transformed my life.I’d say it definitely was a mirror of the things Ariel experiences in the movie.”

Bailey says”the film “changed my outlook on every aspect of my life” and “impacted my life in numerous ways”.

And she hopes that the interpretation she is bringing to the story’s iconic characters will be as meaningful to children.

“The possibility that it’s being performed by me someone who is like me, a woman of shade, I’m amazed and very grateful for what it can bring to all those other Black and brown girls and boys that will be able to be able to see their own in my image,” she says.

“Because I’m sure that if had looked at myself as a child I believe that my entire perspective would have changed.”

For how she added her personal mark on Ariel, Bailey says: “Well I’m able to only be me in tackling something that is this great and amazing.”

“Sometimes it is overwhelming to take a character that everyone has loved and known for a long time and personalize it,” says Bailey.

“But I’ve just listened to the little girl in my head and I try to pay attention to her and make her feel happy. Then I know that if i put all my effort and dedication and all of my energy into it, I’ll do my best. And I’m sure I succeeded.”

“The Little Mermaid” is scheduled to hit theaters on May 26, 2023.
