Kolkata 10th September : the first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) former General Bipin Rawat, has established a military garrison right next to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China named after Bipin Rawat.On Saturday the Indian Army garrison at Kibithu in Arunachal Pradesh was officially designated as Gen Bipin Rawat Military Garrison.
Gen Rawat (then a Colonel) was the commander of the 5/11 Gorkha Rifles at this garrison in 1999-2000.
There are only a handful of military stations in India named in honor of people.
INS Netaji Subhas – the Indian Navy’s headquarters in Kolkata was likely the first.The second was Air Force Station Arjan Singh located in Panagarh in West Bengal.in West Bengal.
Now Gen Bipin Rawat has an Indian Army Garrison with his name on it.
During his time at Kibithu, a strategic spot at the heart of the Indian Ocean, Gen Rawat designated an adjacent feature “Bogra” to honor the Battle Honour Bogra conferred on the 5/11 Gorkha Rifles after the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
Bogra was one of the strongholds of the Pakistan Army in East Pakistan that was taken over by this Battalion prior the march on toward Dhaka as well as the Liberation of Bangladesh.In his time at Kibithu, Gen Rawat also strengthened the civil-military relations and formalized the Border Personnel Meeting mechanism with China.
The military base was officially named Gen Bipin Rawat Military Garrison by Arunachal Governor Brig B.D.Mishra (retd) in the presence of Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
Gen Rawat’s daughter also was in attendance at the ceremony.
Chief Minister Khandu also named the 22-km road that runs from Walong through Kibithu as Gen Bipin Rawat Marg.
According to the Indian Army, this was an appropriate tribute to Gen Rawat, who died in the tragic helicopter crash in December 2021.
A senior official stated that Gen Rawat contributed immensely in improving the security of the region.The development of infrastructure and the social development he created also helped residents greatly.
