Kolkata 9 September : In the wake of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s visit in his favor, Anubrata Mondal, the party’s Birbhum district president, who was detained by the CBI on suspicion of being involved in the cattle smuggling fraud on Friday, stated that he was certain of being released soon.On Friday afternoon , as he was being transported to Kolkata from the Asansol Special Correctional Home, Mondal appeared quite happy while interacting with the media personnel.”I am not a thief or a dacoit that I will remain behind bars for the rest of my life.Nobody spends their entire time behind bars. Therefore, I will be released shortly. If didi is with me, it’s enough and I have nothing more to say.” Mondal told news people.
On a related note, on Thursday afternoon when she addressed an audience of workers and party leaders in Kolkata’s Netaji Indoor Stadium, the chief minister made a plea to her party’s employees from Birbhum to be prepared to take Mondal out of the prison with “the honor of being a hero”.
On Friday afternoon Mondal was arraigned at a special court in Salt Lake in the northern outside of Kolkata in connection with an explosion case in Mangalkot in East Burdwan district which occurred in 2010 under the previous Left Front regime. The court, however, cleared Mondal of any charges in the matter on Friday.”It is the triumph of truth and it has been confirmed that a fake case was filed against me in 2010,”” Mondal said after being exonerated. The court also cleared 14 other defendants in the case of the explosion.
Since the arrest of Mondal by the CBI the chief minister has claimed that Mondal was innocent. She has been in Mondal’s favor while distancing herself from the former West Bengal education minister and Trinamool Congress secretary general, Partha Chatterjee.
Chatterjee was detained by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the multi-crore West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) recruitment fraud.
