New York, Sep 9 : World No.1.and two-time winner of Roland Garros Iga Swiatek of Poland came back from an early deficit of 2-4 in the third set in order to defeat Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and get a spot in the US Open final for the first time in her career on Friday (IST).Swiatek will play No.5 seed Ons Jabeur in the women’s singles final on Saturday following the Tunisian defeated No.17 seed Caroline Garcia of France 6-1 6-3 to become first player to reach the final in Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season since Serena Williams in 2019.
Swiatek came back from a few setbacks to reach the US Open final, fighting back from a set deficit, and after a break in the third set two times, and finally getting past the dominant No.6 seed Sabalenka 3-6 6-1 6-1, 6-4 in 2 hours, 11 minutes inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“I noticed a significant contrast between the initial and the last two.” Swiatek was quoted as saying by WTA after the match.”I’m quite happy that I was able to get my level of energy up a bit.
“Aryna was tough today, no doubt.I felt that she was serving pretty well.It was tough to return in the third game, but I’m satisfied with what I accomplished.”
Swiatek who had never been to a quarterfinal at Flushing Meadows before this season she is in her third Grand Slam final, her second of the year, and the first following the French Open.The Pole is 2 for 2 in Grand Slam finals in her career.
She was crowned champion in Paris in 2020 as well as in the spring of this year.
Swiatek and Jabeur have shared the glory in the four games they played against each other and are currently 1-1 on hard courts.
In their one match this year, Swiatek beat Jabeur easily Tunisian in the Rome final played on clay.
“(Jabeur) plays a distinct style of play than the majority of the other players,” Swiatek stated.”She has a wonderful touch.All of these things are get mixed up she’s an incredibly tough opponent.
“I believe that Aryna played fairly well today, and better than in our previous match,” Swiatek said.”(Losing the opening two games of the third set) sort of helped me return to the court and realize that I have plenty of expectations, even when the second set was quite dominant.
“I just played all in I just went all in, you know.This time, it actually helped me a lot of balls, and the balls I played ended up going in.I’m quite happy, as I think we were both guilty of sometimes taking risks, since the pace was very high,” added Swiatek.
Sabalenka suffered her third loss narrowly in the Grand Slam semifinal.
The Belarusian was eliminated in the fourth and final stage of 2021 Wimbledon and also the 2021 US Open.
Jabeur beat the odds of Garcia in only 66 minutes racking up 21 winners and eight aces.
“So important,” Jabeur said.”She (Garcia) is in the court and places lots of pressure on me on second serves.I’m very happy that she did not take me down in the end.it would have been very difficult to get to 5-4.”
Jabeur is in the final four in her last two Grand Slam appearances after having not reached this point in her first 20 majors.
“After Wimbledon, a lot of pressure was put on me,” Jabeur said.”I’m extremely, incredibly happy that I was able to back up my results.I’m extremely happy that I got to the semi-finals.”
