Shillong 3rd September : the BJP’s National Vice President and the party’s Meghalaya responsible M.Chuba Ao on Saturday announced that the party could end support for the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government within one month. The BJP with two MLAs is an ally junior of the National People’s Party (NPP) controlled coalition of six parties.
Ao confirmed that there are discussions taking place at different levels of the party, and will decide decision on whether to back the MDA government or not within one month.
The BJP leader stated that the party is looking at the reports regarding the corruption accusations against the state government , and the CBI will handle the case when they have all the documents.
Although the NPP headed by Chief Minister Conrad K.Sangma, is a key component of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) but its relationship with the saffron-based party is deteriorating over various issues, particularly following the detention of BJP Meghalaya unit vice-president Bernard N.Marak.
Marak was arrested in Uttar Pradesh on July 25 for allegedly operating the brothel in the West Garo Hills district.
BJP leaders and workers have earlier staged protests in Tura to demand an honest investigation in Marak’s case.
Meanwhile, the party’s members in West Garo Hills organised an unofficial campaign calling for the resignation of the Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Commissioner of the district.
In defense of Marak, BJP leaders said that the farm in the brothel scandal is operational since the year 2019, but the raid was conducted just six months prior the Assembly elections in Meghalaya to defame Marak and to hurt his political standing.
