New York, Sep 2 : Ons Jabeur, the fifth seed, finished her debut week in the US Open with a three sets win over American Shelby Rogers to reach the quarterfinals preliminarily for the third consecutive time on Friday. The win boosted Jabeur’s record when it comes to Americans to 11-1 this year and allowed her to play in the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career.
The Tunisian is the first player from her country who has done well in the Grand Slams.
It was an unfortunate loss for Rogers who for the last two years has beaten many top seeds in Flushing Meadows, including last year’s win over No.1.Ash Barty.
On Friday the American played two solid games of tennis that saw the No.5 seed scurrying over the entire length of the court and at times even had her jumping onto the court in an attempt to remain in the court.
However, when Rogers was unable to focus and served the double fault at 4-4, 6-4, Jabeur took the opportunity and never looked back, winning seven of the final 10 games to secure the victory.
Veronika Kudermetova delivered a top performance on Day 5 of the 2022 US Open, fitting her status as the No.18 seed, as she defeated No.91 Dalma Galfi 6-2, 6-0 in a 47-minute masterclass in serving in the Grandstand.
The 25-year-old Kudermetova opened the initial set of the baseline match after having beaten three consecutive aces the Hungarian one year older to lead by 3-2.Kudermetova was particularly strong on her first serves, scoring 78 percent in the opening set, before achieving an astounding 100 percent in the second set.The first two games, Kudermetova won all 20 service games, aided by 14 aces-in straight-set defeats of Donna Vekic and Maryna Zanevska, in turn.
Kudermetova is currently in the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in her career she is currently enjoying a record-setting No.18 ranking. In 2021, she won a career-record 33 matches and a final-round appearance in Abu Dhabi (losing to Aryna Sabalenka) before claiming her first WTA Tour singles crown at Charleston.
