Kolkata 1st, September : The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to change its previous strategy with regard to granting berths to those who are a turncoat of Trinamool Congress.Prior to the 2019 Lok Sabha and 2021 West Bengal assembly elections the party’s strategy was to lure in the top heavyweights from Trinamool Congress into its fold. However, keeping the election of the three-tier panchayat structure in West Bengal scheduled next year in mind the state division of BJP will focus on bringing in the grassroots Trinamool Congress workers in rural Bengal with clean images in their respective locales and are irritated by the instances of high-ranking party officials being involved in various instances of financial fraud and corruption.
According to West Bengal unit BJP president and party MP Sukanta Majumdar, the campaign slogan is simple: As an Trinamool Congress activist, if you are honest and incapable of acclimatizing with the society of corruption in your party you should join BJP.
“Rumblings of discontent have started to erupt in Trinamool Congress as well regarding the role of the party’s top leaders in various instances of corruption. This is the best moment to ask the BJP to provide them with political platforms.
But there has been no decision regarding the powerful Trinamool Congress leaders on this matter,” Majumdar said.
Trinamool Congress’ general secretary in West Bengal and party spokesperson, Kunal Ghosh, meanwhile in a jibe at Majumdar said that the naive thought of BJP to draw in grassroots activists is a dream for the foreseeable future.
“Our chief leader, as well as West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee has always maintained that the grassroots activists are the real assets of the party. And the grassroots activists also have complete confidence in her, and none of them will change sides,” he said.
CPI-M central committee member Sujan Chakraborty has said Sujan Chakraborty said that BJP as well as Trinamool Congress are two faces of the same coin.
“Before the election is over, these dramas occur, and once the elections are over, everything returns to its original form,” he said.
Commenting on the shift in strategy in relation to a change in strategy regarding the roping in the turncoats, the veteran political analyst Arundhati Mukherjee stated that panchayat elections have a completely different structure in comparison to Lok Sabha and assembly polls.
“The presence of the party’s grassroots activists is higher in the situation of polls for rural civic bodies as opposed to Lok Sabha or assembly polls.
Also, since the voting in each level of the panchayat are conducted in a restricted area and the appearance of the activists from the grassroots contesting the elections is a major issue.
“That is the reason I believe that BJP at this point has made a decision to recruit in the lower levels of Trinamool Congress workers with comparatively clear images.
Only time will tell how long they’ll succeed in this effort,” she said.
