“Azad Saab has always fought to help the residents of Bhaderwah.Although he was in Delhi, he never thought of the people of the area,” said a local businessman.

“We have always been a part of Ghulam Nabi Azad, he is our leader, and it doesn’t matter to us if he is with the Congress or another political party” one local politician who was previously involved with the Congress and is now a supporter of Azad in his campaign, told.

A few former Congress leaders, such as Naresh Gupta an ex-legislator from Bhaderwah who has quit to join Azad believes that the interests of the region are better served under Azad.

“Twelve people of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir sought an appointment with Rahul Gandhi for the last three years, but were unable to get it done,” Gupta said.

Azad was a candidate and won Assembly elections for Bhaderwah with an unprecedented margin following his appointment as Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister in the year 2006.

He however, was unable to win the parliamentary elections for the Udhampur constituency of which Bhaderwah is an element of to Jitendra Singh of the BJP in 2014.
