G-23 plans to field a an official in Congress presidential election?

New Delhi, Aug 29 : The leaders of the Congress G-23 are preparing to run for president scheduled for the 17th of October with the former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan being viewed as candidates, sources told.
There was no clarity about the situation.

The G-23 was seeking broad-ranging changes in the organization, has been harmed by the resignation of senior leaders such as Ghulam Nabi Azad and others.

Tharoor was a proponent of contests for the top post in the party in an article published on Monday.

As Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot emerges as the front contender for Congress President, he is seen as the preferred choice of the interim chief Sonia Gandhi, even as some are calling for to see the return of Rahul Gandhi – with Gehlot as well announcing his name.G-23 was believed to have made a decision to nominate one candidate in the event that Gandhi was present.

It remains to be determined if it would succeed since it appeared unlikely that Sonia Gandhi’s decision could be questioned.

The last time an elections were held to fill the Congress President’s position was in 2000 when Jitendraprasada has been a candidate for Sonia Gandhi but lost.

In the meantime, Congress General Secretary, Organisation, K.C.Venugopal confirmed that the timetable for the election of the party’s chief was already announced and those who wish to run for the office should submit their nominations by September 30.
