6.4-magnitude quake jolts Indonesia, no tsunami alert issued

Jakarta 29 Aug : A powerful earthquake of 6.4 on the Richter scale rattled the Indonesian West Sumatra province on Monday the authorities said.
The earthquake was felt around 10.29 a.m.(local time) with the epicentre at 116 km northwest of Kepulauan Mentawai (Mentawai islands) district, and the shallow depth of 10 km beneath the sea bed, Xinhua news agency reported.

The tremor didn’t have the potential to cause tsunami, the authorities claimed.

The 6.4-magnitude earthquake is classified as the primary shock, and a 5.9-magnitude earthquake occurred around 5.34 a.m.
