Kiev 28 August : Ukraine authorities said more grain is being transported through the Danube River than at any moment since the beginning of the war just six months ago.On the weekend 11 vessels made their way to the rivers’ ports of Izmail, Reni and Ust-Dunaysk and loaded an amount of 45,000 tonnes of grain according to the Ukrainian Infrastructure Ministry said on Sunday.
Since March over 4 million tonnes of grain has been removed of the Ukraine’s Danube ports, the dpa news agency reported, quoting the Ukrainian ministry.
Following the Russian attack began, the focus on Ukraine’s key Black Sea ports, which were shut down for months and caused in millions of tonnes of grain not being able to be shipped out of the country.
On the 22nd of July, Ukraine and Russia under UN mediation agreed to sign an agreement with Turkey to allow exports from Ukraine from three Black Sea ports, relieving the pressure on the global food market.
The Istanbul Coordination Centre, which was established as part of the deal it announced at the weekend 1 million tonnes of grains and other food items were exported via the Black Sea route so far.In total, of 103 ships have set sail either from or to Ukraine.
As reported by the Infrastructure Ministry, some grain has been diverted via more difficult routes, which involve cargo ships crossing the Danube River toward Romania, or via rail.
