Kolkata 27 August : Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, who were arrested on charges of sexual assault in Indo-Bangladesh border zones in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, were sentenced to seven days of police custody by an appeals court on Saturday afternoon.In addition, a spokesperson of the BSF’s Eastern Command office in Kolkata confirmed that both of the suspects – sub-inspector assistant S.P.Chero and constable Altaf Hossein, who were detained at night on Friday were exiled from the force with immediate effect.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim, aged 23, was trying to enter the country with her infant in Bagda at the time she was pursued and arrested by suspect BSF personnel.Instead of arresting them and turning them over to local police force, the accused were able to drag her to the nearby field of gourd cultivation and raped her.
Local MLA from Bagda Biswajit Das, who was elected as an BJP candidate in the 2021 West Bengal assembly election and later switched to the an incumbent Trinamool Congress camp, said that the harassment of the people of all ages at the border, which is nearing villages in the region by BSF personnel stationed there is fairly frequent.”I frequently receive complaints of harassment from village residents.I will present a full review to our chief minister Mamata Banerjee, and on Sunday, we will hold an anti-government rally in the region,” he said.
