Rome August 26, : A rescue maritime organisation working in the Mediterranean announced on Friday that they pulled more than 160 individuals from of the sea overnight and left them with around 210 on board as they searched for a docking spot for docking at.The crew of the Ocean Viking said the rescues occurred in two phases, the first when they discovered the group of around 40 persons in an overfilled vessel near the coast of Libya that was on the verge of sinking according to the dpa news agency.
Another operation that saw the crew take on an additional 120 people, according to SOS Mediterranee, the company that operates the rescue vessel.
More rescues are likely to be made public in the days ahead.
Doctors Without Borders has sent its Geo Barents ship back to the Mediterranean region, which is the site of the majority of rescue operations for migrants because a lot of people attempt to escape towards Europe from Africa in vessels which are not secure.
The ship is on its route to the troubled area.
It has already taken in people in another region of the Mediterranean and reported that it helped save 110 people last Sunday, and put the bodies in Tarent, in southern Italy.
The Spanish rescue group Open Arms is also off the Italian coast, waiting for a suitable location to transport more than 100 people it has helped.
It’s been awaited for 10 days.
Most of people who choose to make this risky crossing end in in Italy where large sections of the population are growing in opposition to the continuous flow of incomers.
According to the UN according to the UN, nearly 920 people are missing or dead following attempts to make Mediterranean travel this year.
