Taipei Taiwan, August 25, : Taiwans Ministry of National Defence “will put in drone defense systems next year” following an “humiliating” video of Taiwanese soldiers throwing rocks at a drone hovering in Kinmen County emerged on Chinese social media, according to media reports.In the video, likely taken by a drone that was civilian on the 16th of August and then uploaded to the Weibo microblogging site Two military personnel wearing masks were seen throwing stones at an Chinese drone while it was hovering above an Taiwanese military base, RFA reported.
The drone also took an image of two soldiers looking at it from their room with one of them holding camera.They appeared shocked and interested, according to the report.
Kinmen Defence Command Kinmen Defence Command Kinmen Defence Command, which is in charge of the islands that are outlying of Kinmen announced this week that the accident occurred on Erdan an island that is seven kilometers from Kinmen island, but just under 6 kilometers from the shores of China’s Xiamen island.
Kinmen is one of Taiwan’s outlying islands which is further away from China’s mainland compared to Taiwan’s main island.
The video and photo became all over Weibo as well as Chinese social media users weren’t wasting time laughing of it.
One person, Zhao DaShuai posted on Twitter: “As you can see Taiwan’s air defense in Taiwan was in fact active.”
“Taiwan’s most advanced surface-to air weapon is exposed,” another user chimed in.
The drone’s imagery was soon recognized in Taiwan, with Taiwanese citizens saying it was “humiliating” as well as “inexcusable”.
“Such drone incidents have has never been seen prior to in Kinmen,” said Timothy Tsai, who was born on the island and runs an organization that is local to military history.
“It appears to be a threat to the security of the island,” Tsai said, noting that the military “should really be looking to strengthen the drone control and prevention” on islands further out, RFA reported.
