North Carolina (US), August 25, : Dominic Thiem’s campaign in the Winston-Salem Open came to a stop after Jack Draper claimed a comfortable straight sets win in this venue on Wednesday.In the first match between Draper and Thiem it was the 20-year old Brit who secured his spot in the final eight with an easy 6-1, 6-4 win.
Draper took off in the opening set, generating five breaks and taking two of them.His sole break point that was converted successfully in the second set cleared the way for the Winston-Salem debutant to play the rest of the match.
The world’s number 55 Draper has reached three quarter-finals of the Tour this season, and 2020 US Open champion Thiem had been in the process of reaching the final eight in his last three tournaments in Bastad, Gstaad (where he made it to the semis) and Kitzbuhel.
Draper did not give up one break opportunity and he said, “I was really good behind serve and was very solid.
The second set, it was a struggle due to the fact that he came up with some stunning shots.It was a true honor to play with Dominic.He’s an outstanding player. “I started with confidence I was confident, and I began with a good start.
I was hitting the ball and felt comfortable in the weather conditions.It was a tough start as I felt like everyone was backing Dominic and I was aware I needed to start out with confidence and focus and that’s exactly what I did.”
Draper will play Marc-Andrea Huesler in the quarter-finals after the world number 102 beat Ilya Ivashka, according to DPA.
Botic van Zandschulp is the favorite following Grigor Dimitrov’s resignation because of health issues with the Dutchman getting to the final eight after beating the Spaniard Jaume Munar in straight sets.He will play Benjamin Bonzi after the Frenchman’s 7-5, 6-2 loss of Thiago Monteiro.
Maxime Cressy will take on Adrian Mannarino after coming from a set down to beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-7 (4-7) 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) Then Richard Gasquet and Laslo Djere are the other two quarter-finalists in the tie following their respective victories against Steve Johnson and Jason Kubler.
