United Nations, Aug 25 : The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has warned of the emergence of a new emergency in the nation, in which it claims 15,000 people are fleeing because of recent combat in the last few days.The conflict between the two groups re-emerged in the middle of August in Upper Nile State, in the north of the country, the dpa news agency reported an announcement made on Wednesday , by the Mission as saying.
UNMISS stated that 200 people sought refuge in the UN refugee camp in Makalal the capital of the province of Upper Nile State.
Numerous children are reported missing or have been separated from their parents.
Their situation is exacerbated by the flooding of the rainy season, because it hampers the movement of essential aid to the humanitarian sector required to aid the refugees.
South Sudan, with a population of approximately 11 million, is under the control of a fragile transitional government led by president Salva Kiir, and the former leader of the rebels Riek Machar since the beginning of 2020.
In 2013 there was a civil war in the oil-rich country that has been hit by years of conflict which killed thousands and forced millions of people to leave.
Despite a peace accord signed five years ago, a variety of armies are fighting for the supremacy of the region.
UNMISS stated that it “urges the parties in conflict to immediately end the violence” and “calls on local and national authorities to take immediate steps to protect civilians and avoid the intensification of the violence”.
