New Delhi, Aug 24 : The Indian tennis player Sania Mirza on Tuesday pulled out of the US Open 2022 due to the injury to a tendon in her forearm.She also hinted about a changes in her retirement plans.The 35-year-old suffered the injury while playing at the Canadian Open earlier this month.She was a participant at the last week’s Cincinnati Open before reaching the semifinals of the women’s doubles in Toronto with partner Madison Keys.
This year, Sania had declared that 2022 would be her final season in professional tennis, but the six-time Grand Slam champion hinted that the latest developments could alter her decision to retire.
“I have some less than stellar news.
I injured my forearm/elbow playing in Canada two weeks ago.I didn’t realize how bad it was until I saw my scans last night.I’ve torn a small part of my tendon” Sania Mirza said in an announcement on Instagram.
“I will be absent for an (few) months and I have been withdrawn of the US Open.
This isn’t the best choice, and it’s a terrible time to do so.It could alter the details of some of my retirement plans.However, I’ll keep you informed,” she added.
The doubles World No 1 was on an absence due to maternity from 2018 until her return in the month of January in 2020 in Hobart.
Sania was paired with Nadiia Kichenok of Ukraine to take home the title.Then, at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 the newly-formed team of Sania and Ankita Raina were not able to shine and they suffered an early exit.
The Ukrainian team of Nadiia and Lyudmyla defeated them easily.
In January, Sania and her Czech partner Lucie Hradecka were eliminated in the third round of the women’s doubles at the French Open.
The Indian tennis star also said goodbye to Wimbledon after she along with her partner Mate Pavic of Croatia were eliminated in the mixed doubles semi-finals against Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk.
