UNICEF head expresses concern over child deaths in Ukraine conflict

United Nations, Aug 23 : UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Catherine Russell has voiced concern about child deaths in the Ukraine conflict.
A minimum of 972 children in Ukraine were killed or injured in violence since the war erupted about six months ago, an average of more than five kids killed or injured every day. This is just the numbers that the United Nations has been able to confirm. The actual amount could be significantly higher, according to Russell in an announcement on Monday.

She stated that the majority of the child deaths were the result of the use of explosive weapons, which don’t distinguish between combatants and civilians particularly when employed in areas with a lot of people, Xinhua news agency reported.

The beginning of the school year in just a few days’ time is an unsettling reminder of how many students in Ukraine are losing.

The Ukrainian education system is devastated due to the rise of violence across the country.Schools have been targeted or abused by various parties which has resulted in families being unable to feel safe in sending their kids to school.

UNICEF estimates that one in 10 schools has been destroyed or damaged, she said.

“UNICEF continues to demand the immediate end of war in Ukraine and to ensure that all children are safe from danger.

This includes a halt to the harrowing recourse of explosive weapons in the areas of population and attacks on infrastructure and facilities for civilians.Children in Ukraine need security and stability access to safe education and child protection services and psychosocial assistance. But , more than anything else the children of Ukraine need peace.” Russell added.
