The Everyday Robots project is still in its early stages The bots are slow and cautioushowever, the bots have been given an upgrade: better understanding of languages as a result of Google’s vast language model (LLM) PaLM.

Most robots respond to short and straightforward instructions, such as “bring me a glass of water”.

However, LLMs such as GPT-3 or Google’s MuM can more accurately discern the purpose behind more oblique commands.

In Google’s case you could tell one of the Everyday Robots prototypes, “I have spilled my drink Can you help me?” The robot processes this request by a list of possible options and interprets it as “fetch me the sponge out of the kitchen”.

Google has named the resulting system PaLM-SayCan.The name that reflects how this model blends the language comprehension capabilities of LLMs (“Say”) with the “affordance grounding” of its robots.

Google stated that by integrating PaLM-SayCan with its robots, the robots were able plan the appropriate responses to user-instructions 84 percent percent of the time. They also execute them 74 percent of the time.
