Kingston (Jamaica) August 11 : New Zealand opener Devon Conway sees the T20I series against the West Indies a great opportunity for his team to experiment with diverse combinations in preparation to prepare for the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia to be held in October and November. “I don’t think we’ve established the roles of our team in the near future.” of yet. It’s a fantastic chance to experiment with different combinations. It’s great that everyone is back.It will certainly provide great opportunities for guys to play various roles.”
“Whatever they’ll be in the future of this series we’re not sure but it’s fun for us to play around with different combinations and play various roles” stated Conway following New Zealand defeated West Indies by 13 runs in the first T20I at Sabina Park.
The game also marked Conway’s debut appearance in T20Is since last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE He scored 43 from 29 balls in New Zealand’s score of 185-5.
In the meantime, he made 173 runs in seven innings for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2022, which included three fifties.
“It was really nice to be back in the field again.I’ve had a 3 week without the group and it was refreshing to meet everyone again. It was great to play in the middle.
Everyone is excited to get out and play because 20-20 cricket brings that thrill out.It was a great day at work,” stated Conway.
In addition captain Kane Williamson made 47, while James Neesham provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 33 from 15 balls.”We have some talented and skilled players. If you take a look at the likes of Kane, he might not be as powerful or explosive as Neesham however he is able to strike at 150 with ease on his day – or even 200.”
“He simply brings a different pan to the team.We have quite a long group of batters who are keen to put their hats in the rings. This tournament will give the chance for a number of players to be accountable with the majority of the roles that they are assigned,” observed Conway.
Conway was also awestruck of West Indies lower order fightback in the match. The team was left with 72 runs to go from the final four overs Romario Shepherd hit a 16-ball, unbeaten 31 (three sixes and four) in a 58-run unbroken eighth wicket stand with Odean Smith who smashed an unbeaten 12-ball 27 (four fours and six).
The pair brought the total down to 26 in the final over however West Indies fell short by 13 runs.
“Lot of credit to their batters for how they batted towards the end. There was some amazing hitting from two of players near the final. It was very cool to witness the strength and power they have.”
“Naturally If you’ve got an entire team of six or seven down you’d think there’s nothing to be expected but this West Indies group they have is very dynamic and is full of depth and keeps going at it.It was about securing the game as fast as you could, and making sure you’re not allowing them to get a shot to win the game, even when you think you’re ahead.”
