By Avinash Kr Atish New Delhi, Aug 6 : Most of the time in many fields, one large and successful person can inspire their children or close-and-dear ones to do great things in life. One person who is one of them is Australian cricketer Mitchell Starc, whose younger brother Brandon Starc clinched a silver medal in high jump at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The majority of the cricketers in India or around the globe know about Mitchell’s adventures with the ball on cricket grounds, but Brandon is creating his own name in sports and is breaking out of the shadows of his elder brother.
Fighting through the discomfort and injury, Brandon cleared 2.25 metres in high jump to claim silver at CWG 2022, just behind New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr, who claimed the silver on countback.
The entire process was not straightforward for Brandon who would leap and often miss the height he required, then go to his chair, and then take off his shoes.
He would rub his feet and wrap his heel with tape, put his shoes back on, and then jump again. The defending champion fell one time at 2.15m He took three attempts to cross 2.19m and two attempts to cross at 2.22m He then jumped 2.25m with his first effort. That was the leap to bring him to the medal ceremony, even though logic and pain told him he wouldn’t.
Brandon began his sporting career with Parramatta Little Athletics while attending Lidcombe Public School.
But, he began to focus on the high jump in 2009 while at Hills Sports High School. The Australian was awarded silver with his personal record of 2.19m at his debut international debut at the first Youth Olympic Games in 2010.
He was ranked eighth in the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the following year he increased the record to 2.30m and then he smashed 2.31m in the qualifying round at the world championships. He was able to secure a spot in the finals. In this way, he was the first Australian since Tim Forsyth in 1997 to participate in the world championship finals.
Selected for the 2016 Rio Olympics, he cleared the qualifying round with 2.29m to advance to the finals where he was 15th.Due to an injury to his shin in the year 2017, he was unable to meet the requirements of qualifying to compete in the world championship.
His tallest size since Rio -2.28m.2.28m in the 2018 Commonwealth Games trials. With an individual record of 2.32m the Aussie was awarded gold in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The same year, Starc added 3cm to his personal best after he climbed 2.36m in Germany. This was the greatest jump by an Australian in the last 21 years, and pushed him to the third position in the world.
A few days later, Starc won the 2018 Diamond League finals and went to take home the Continental Cup.
Despite his injuries in 2019 he was ranked at sixth in the finals. He changed his run-up to the high jump by reducing it by 2 steps in the year 2019.Then, in 2021 he took home his fourth title in the national high jump and was able to compete at the Olympics with a leap of 2.33m.
When Brandon was asked if he had emerged from his brother’s shadow and the athlete was able to smile about it.
“I don’t know, it’s an enormous shadow to come out of maybe a little larger than it actually was.It was surreal , really.Absolutely amazing I’m not able to express it in words.I’m sure to be in tears (for the ceremony for the medal).I’m going love every second of it.” Brandon had said after winning gold at the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast.
He may be able to admit it or not , but the athlete who is high-jumping is creating his own legacy and history in the country of Australia that is well-known for its thriving sport culture.
Discussing pacer Mitchell Starc’s role in Australian cricket, he has been one of their most prolific match-winners in the past 10 years or so.It doesn’t matter if it’s white or red-ball cricket the left-arm pacer most often provides the most terrifying image for the best batsmen. He has been instrumental in helping Australian win the Ashes series and even the 50-over World Cup with his sheer brilliance.
Starc was the highest wicket-taker in two consecutive ODI World Cups (2015 and 2019) This shows that he is built for big stages. Then, in January of 2022, he was named Australia’s male cricketer of the year, and also received the Allan Border Medal, which is thought to be the top personal award in Australian male cricket.
It is interesting to note that Starc is married to Alyssa Healy, a wicketkeeper for the Australian women’s team. She is also the niece of the former Australia glover, Ian Healy.
Alyssa herself is a major name in cricket for women and is known for her match-winning knocks at the World Cup, most recently in April 2022 when Australia won their record-breaking seventh Women’s World Cup title.
In the India against Australia match at the 2022 CWG last week, Alyssa Healy claimed two wickets of Smriti Mandhana as well as Shafali Verma.
She became the first wicket-keeper to score 100 dismissed in T20I cricket in both the women’s and men’s category.
She was part of the Australia team that awaited the ICC Women’s World Cup trophy in India in 2013 and a third World T20 victory in Bangladesh in 2014.
The attacking batter also assisted in helping Australia to regain the Ashes from England in 2015.
In the year 2018, Healy was awarded the ICC T20 Player of the Year due to her exceptional performances that led her country to an unprecedented fourth ICC World T20 title.
In the year 2020 she was named Player of the Match in Australia’s T20 World Cup Final victory against India at the MCG.Then, in 2022, she rose to even higher heights, smashing 170 against her traditional adversaries England in the final match to help lead Australia to a World Cup victory in Christchurch.
