Director Santhosh P Jayakumar’s “Poikkal Kuthirai is a well-crafted commercial film that plays on the father-daughter bond. The film also features an enjoyable little investigative section that makes the story fascinating and entertaining.
The story, for all practical purposes, can be dismissed as being a run-of-the-mill kind, if it were not for the fact that the protagonist is a physically-challenged man of limited means facing an incredibly difficult challenge that requires quite a bit of physical effort to overcome it.
Synopsis:
Kathiravan (played by Prabhu Deva) is an amputee with only one leg, is a happy man, whose entire life revolves around his daughter Magizh (Baby Aazhiya).Since his wife has passed and Kathiravan’s primary concern is to make sure his daughter receives an excellent education in accordance with the wishes of his wife’s passing.
The peace of life is restored when one day, the daughter falls on stage during a show in school.
He discovers that she suffers from a medical condition that requires a procedure which could cost him a massive amount of money. When Kathiravan is out of alternatives his father (Prakash Raj) who is in prison suggests that he kidnap the child of Rudra, a major industrialist Rudra(Varalaxmi Sarathkumar) and demand cash.
The reluctant Kathiravan begins to watch Rudra’s children’s movements in attempt to save his child from suffering. However, just as he is about to take the child, a shocking event happens that leaves not only Rudra but Kathiravan stunned.
The film is intriguing in segments.Poikkal Kuthirai starts off with a slow start with scenes that are used to highlight the deep father-daughter bond.
The film begins to pick up speed only after it is revealed that Kathiravan’s daughter fights for her life, and the man is in no financial straits. However, an unneeded episode that involves a non-governmental organization swindling money once more slows down the speed of the movie.
It regains the pace it lost with important developments. At the point that the first half comes to an end the story will have you paying your attention.
Indeed, Santhosh ends the first portion with an exuberance, posing an interesting question that will entice you to read more. The second portion is packed full of turnings and twists, and keeps you captivated.
The film is filled with laudable performances.Prabhu Deva deserves to be credited for the incredible effort he’s put into playing a character with only one leg.Being a one-legged character requires you to shift all your body weight onto one leg.Sitting on one leg for a long amount of time can be difficult. However, Prabhu Deva appears to have done more than stand but fought and danced with one leg.It was which is a demanding task. For completing this difficult task in an amazing manner, Prabhu Deva wins brownie points.
Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s performance is amazing.
In actual fact, she seems to have improved her speech delivery as well.Although in the past she has been known to spoken in a jumble, she speaks at a reasonable speed in the film, which adds an extra dimension to her performance.
John Kokken as Varalaxmi’s husband and comedian Jegan performs well.Stars Shaam and Raiza Wilson have nothing to contribute in the movie.
Baby Aazhiya, who plays Prabhu Deva’s daughter in the film is adorable.
The background music of D Imman was just about adequate.
The film features some of cheerful songs that appear to have enthralled the crowd.
Despite a compelling story and a unique style of narration the film leaves you bored at times.
The boredom could have been avoided if the editor of the film been more disciplined in her work.
Santhosh Jayakumar’s “Poikkal Kuthirai” is an eclectic film.
In other words, it’s an film that is effective in sections.
