Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada has been creating awareness among the general public about pulmonary diseases.Manipal hospitals Vijayawada launched it’s Interventional pulmonology unit with advanced equipment for the diagnosis & treatment of lung diseases.
Equipment like EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound) & rigid bronchoscopy, airway stenting, thoracoscopy are available with us now.
Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada, has a team of experienced pulmonologists, who are capable of offering the most comprehensive care for all pulmonary diseases, including interstitial lung diseases, bronchial asthma, allergy & immunotherapy, pleural diseases, lung cancer, sleep disorders, tuberculosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).The department follows a multidisciplinary approach involving collaboration with other departments like cardiology, oncology, otolaryngology, and nephrology.

The patients are evaluated and managed under one roof.
Using the advanced equipment in the hospital, the doctors were able to detect early and accurately diagnose rare diseases, such as sarcoidosis, granulomatous polyangiitis, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis and pulmonary amyloidosis.
Speaking about this Dr.Gutta Lokesh, Consultant – Interventional Pulmonologist, Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada, said “I am glad to be a part of the awareness programme on pulmonary diseases for the general public in the state. It has helped save many lives. For instance, there was this case of a 25-year-old male patient, who was brought to us two months ago.He had a history of dengue – ARDS,had undergone tracheostomy, and was put on ventilator for two weeks. He had severe stridor and breathlessness for a week.
On evaluation, it was found that he had high tracheal stenosis on CT neck and severe subglottic stenosis. We performed rigid bronchoscopy and repaired the tracheal stenosis with electro surgery and balloon bronchoplasty followed by silicon airway stenting.
Also, external fixation was done with HITCH STITCH to prevent stent migration, Now the patient is doing well and living a normal life.
Adding to this Dr.Uday Kiran, Consultant – Pulmonary Medicine, Respiratory Sciences, Manipal Hospitals, Vijayawada, said, “A 26-year-old male patient was admitted to the ICU here with multiple fractures.Multiple surgeries were conducted on him and he remained in the ICU for 3 weeks.
He had severe surgical emphysema with bilateral ICD performed in November 2021.He was presented to us with severe stridor with respiratory distress with vital parameters spo2 of 100% RA, tachypnoeic and tachycardiac.
On evaluation, pinhole tracheal stenosis was detected.CT neck revealed lower tracheal stenosis.
So, bronchoscopy was required to treat the pinhole tracheal stenosis grade 3.The patient underwent Rigid bronchoscopy, electrosurgical repair and balloon bronchoplasty, followed by silicon stenting under general anaesthesia.Following the treatment, the patient recovered and is doing well now.”
