Sydney, January 1, 2018 : .Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey stated that his initial reaction to being called up for the Ashes team was excitement.
Carey said that he was able to adjust faster to Test cricket after playing in T20 Internationals as well as one-day matches for Australia.Carey was selected for the Ashes team after Tim Paine, former captain of the game, took an indefinite mental rest from it due to lewd texts messages from 2017, which were sent by a former Cricket Tasmania staffer.
These messages were resurfaced just three weeks prior to the start of the marquee series. The result was Paine’s resignation as captain, and Pat Cummins took over.
Paine finally took a break from cricket for his mental health.
My immediate reaction was excitement.
Although I have been given the opportunity to play, it is not a great situation.WA Today quoted Carey as saying, “I was thrilled to be recognized as being closer to (Tests for Australia), and a lot more hard work over a few years has paid off.”
Carey was a veteran of Australia’s ODI and T20I teams before making his Ashes Test debut.Carey was a regular figure in white-ball matches, and even served as the captain during his introduction to Test cricket.
It certainly helps to have a lot of preparation for the Ashes and the summer. It was not something I expected to do, but I felt like my experience with white-ball teams made it feel more like I could make an immediate impact on the team with my skills than just seeing it as a big event.
It’s been a great experience to be able to compete in big matches like the semi-final of the World Cup, as well as a few T20 and one day games for Australia with a bunch of other guys.I feel ready to go.It’s been enjoyable and I was able to work hard, get out there, and enjoy the experience. It was a great feeling to be free, and I enjoyed the moments at the slip alongside Davy (David Warner), and Smudge(Steve Smith).
Carey’s three Test runs have accumulated 97 runs.He also scored a run at home in Adelaide, where he has 51.Carey’s 14 wicketkeeping catches include eight in Brisbane. This is Carey’s highest Test debut.Carey, 30, is grateful for the chance to see his childhood dream of playing Test cricket become a reality.
It’s boyhood goals. As a child, you may dream of it, and as you grow up, you will have your goals set.I know that my ultimate goal is to play Test cricket.Growing up, Christmas Day was the most important day on the calendar. You had to get up at midnight, pick up a bat and hit the field while you watched the Boxing Day Test.
It was quite an experience to have the green baggy on and walk out onto the MCG.It was surreal to do it that way, winning the Ashes match, as well.”I’m grateful to have been given this opportunity.”
