By Avinash Kr Atish New Delhi, January 1, 2018 : .The year 2022 offers a unique opportunity for the Mithali Raj-led Indian women’s cricket team, to move beyond the story of ‘yetso close but not yet far’, and write a remarkable and historical tale of success, with a title victory in the ICC Womens ODI World Cup to be played in New Zealand, March 4 – April 3.
India reached the 2020 T20 World Cup final after being defeated by England by nine runs. They fell at the final hurdle once more, falling to an Australian team at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), by 85 runs.
The Women in Blue are determined to win their first ICC Trophy in 2022.
Unfortunately, the year that passed was not kind to the women’s cricket team.
They lost the ODI series against South Africa (4-4), England (2-1) and Australia (2-2).The latter two were part of the multi format series.
It is clear that India, at their best are able to defeat anyone. They ended Australia’s 26-match win streak of ODIs in India last year, which lasted four years.
Veteran cricketers Jhulan and Mithali Raj, who have given their time to Indian cricket for more than two decades, could be retiring at the 50-over World Cup.They will certainly try to end their careers high.
India will win the World Cup in New Zealand with skipper Mithali, and seamer Jhulan. However, these veteran players will require plenty of support from India’s rising stars such as Shafali Verma and Yastika Bhattia, Richa Gosh, and Sneh Rana.
Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur as well as Punam Raut, Shikha Pandey and Punam Raut have sufficient international cricket experience, which will prove crucial for New Zealand’s challenging climate.Five ODIs will also be played against New Zealand hosts in February.
This will provide a great preparation for the big event.
India has a great mix of experience and youth. They will face Pakistan in their World Cup opener on March 6, Tauranga.
Australia and England have always been India’s nemesis at the ICC events. But, as the saying goes, “If you don’t take it on it doesn’t make you better.” The Mitali Raj-led side is determined to reverse this trend and claim their first ICC silverware.
A women’s IPL could be coming to India in 2022, which would also make women’s cricket more accessible.A growing number of people are calling for an organized women’s IPL.Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary recently said that they were working to organize the event.
The women’s T20 Challenge attracted a lot of interest from the fans, which is a positive sign.
Shah stated that while we all desire a league similar to IPL for women cricketers it’s not about creating three to four teams or announcing the launch a women’s IPL.
There are many factors to consider, such as a designated window, international star availability, and the bilateral commitments made by member boards. He said that we are currently exploring our options, and looking into organising a similar league to our female players.
Women’s cricket in India could see a World Cup win in New Zealand, and the IPL title for women in India.
