New Delhi, 31 December : .Citing Covid-induced inflation as the cause, Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Singhodia has asked the Centre for an increase of the central tax on the capital.
The Centre has received only Rs 325 crore over the past 21 years.He also said that it was unfair to the Union Territory.
Sisodia stated that Delhi had been receiving only Rs 325 million from central taxes for 21 years.This was during Thursday’s annual meeting of chief ministers and Niramala Sitharaman, Union Finance Minister, to discuss the Union Budget 2022-2023.
The 2020-21 central assistance for the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT), which was Rs.370 crore in 2000-01, has now been increased to Rs 626 crore.He said that Delhi’s expenditures have increased ninefold from 7200 crore in 2000-01, to 69,000 crore by 2021-22.
The Delhi Deputy Chief Minister stated that the government had incurred expenses on Covid-related emergency and emergent activities, which are still ongoing in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Accordingly, an increase in central aid is needed now.The Delhi Deputy Chief Minister stated that the Ministry of Home Affairs has been asked to allocate 1,925 crore (RE) 2021-22, and Rs 2,020 million in 2022-23.
AAP Leader said that Delhi’s contribution is only 4.4 percent to GDP, even though Delhiites make up 1.49 percent of total country population.
The per capita income in Delhi is almost three times that of the national average.
At current prices, the per capita income in Delhi is 3,54,004, which is three times more than the national average (128 829) for 2020-21.
Sisodia, who is seeking Goods and Services Tax for the National Capital, stated that the Pre-GST system allowed every state to make big and small tax, revenue, and budget decisions according to its challenges.
These decisions now are made collectively.
The state faces many difficulties at times.Covid-19 caused business to stop.We are also facing lockdown in Delhi because of pollution.”All this being said, it is certain that all states will have a difficult time running their governments if GST compensation for GST does not get carried forward,” he stated.
The Deputy Chief Minister stressed the need to increase the allocation of funds for the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi, (MCDs).
He stated that “The face of the nation is the national capital but the MCD faces an acute shortage of funding and is unable to maintain cleanliness and develop in the capital.The MCDs should receive funds just like the other states.
The Centre was also requested by him to set up a Sainik school for the capital so children have access to quality education.
