Melbourne, December 27, : , Former England captain Michael Vaughan urged Cricket Australia to host the fourth and perhaps fifth Ashes Tests at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This is in light of the changing COVID-19 situation. Two England cricket team staff members and their families were COVID positive on Monday. This led to panic and all the touring parties had to undergo Rapid Antigen Testing.
The proceeding for Day 2 of the Ashes Test was delayed half an hour.
Also, COVID positive cases were reported by Channel Seven’s Ashes broadcaster.
The commentary team was also overhauled for day two, with several callers being ruled out of close contact.
Vaughan stated that the COVID chaos was causing the Australian cricket board to reconsider moving the two remaining Tests from Sydney to Melbourne.
While the fourth Ashes Test will be played at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the fifth and last Ashes match is being held in Bellerive Oval.
Cricket Australia must act fast and take advantage of this situation.Vaughan commented on Fox Cricket in an unusual manner, according to sen.com.au.
On Monday, there were 6,324 COVID-19 new cases in New South Wales.Vaughan believes that SCG should be the fourth test venue.
This will reduce the chance of being exposed to the virus.
Could the Test match in Melbourne be held under the lights of the MCG to ensure that everyone stays in Victoria, where there are different protocols to Sydney?” Are we willing to take two teams, including broadcast staff and production personnel to Sydney? Vaughan added that when you get to the SCG there is only one case and the Test match has been cancelled.
Some of the more strict COVID-19 protocols such as density limits and QR code check ins have been reinstated in NSW.Further measures may be taken to stop the spread of Omicron.
Victoria also recorded nearly 2,000 cases Monday. However, the ex-england captain stated that it was safer for the teams and their support staff to remain together than to move to another venue.
Vaughan stated, “Surely Cricket Australia must be proactive and realize that it’s going to not be easy (even staying here with the England team),”
The fact it is a family member who tested positive, Christmas Day.everybody’s going to be around that family member so the possibility of the COVID negative spreading around the side.Cricket Australia needs to take action quickly. It would be sensible to say, “Okay, here’s the situation right now.But it was not a week ago.We have to do something.”
It (relocating last Ashes Tests from MCG to MCG could be an option. How can we get the last two Test matches in a safe environment? The sensible thing for me would be to say “alright, everyone’s in Melbourne. We know that the protocol is different in Melbourne.Stay here and play the next test match.Let’s see where the land’s at 10 days.”
