Damascus : , December 13, 2013: Geir Pedersen, UN Special Envoy for Syria, has stated that he now sees new opportunities to find a political solution for Syria following his talks with representatives from Arab and West countries. “I believe there’s a chance now to begin to explore what I refer to a step for step approach.

According to Xinhua, he said that he has been travelling extensively in the Arab world, and had “in-depth conversations” with Americans as well as Europeans.
To find a political solution for Syria’s decade-long conflict, it was important to analyze the positions of international and regional players.
“My message is that there is another possibility to start to explore possible avenues, to start to move forward on this process,” he said.
After arriving in Damascus earlier on Sunday, Pedersen held a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, after which he told the media that he had an in-depth discussion that lasted for more than two hours, during which all the challenges facing Syria were discussed.
“We obviously looked at the military situation, the economic situation, the humanitarian situation, and of course the political process linked to that,” he added.
