Vijayawada : , Wednesday, November 24, 2009: The election of the chairman and vice chairmen of Kondapalli Municipality, Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, was held as directed by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.The poll process was completed by the State Election Commission under tight security.
The court ordered that the result not be declared.
TDP ward members reached municipal office under Vijayawada MP Kesineni Ni, while ward members from the YSR Congress Party(YSRCP) were led by MLA Vasanta Sri Prasad.
The election was not conducted on Monday or Tuesday.Kesineni Nani, a member of the opposition Telugu Desam Party and Kesineni Nagi approached the High Court to request that the Assistant Election Officer be directed to conduct the election immediately.
The court observed that MP Kesineni Nai could vote as an ex-officio member because the election was postponed.
Justice D.Ramesh summoned Vijayawada’s police commissioner (in Charge) G.Pala Raju, and Shivanarayana Reddy, Assistant Election Officer.The judge asked Shivanarayana Reddy why he didn’t seek the assistance of police when he said that the situation was not conducive to conducting the election.
The court issued the direction to conduct Wednesday’s election.
It then adjourned the case hearing until November 25.The court directed the poll panel not to announce poll results until further orders.
YSRCP and TDP won 14 wards in the last week’s municipal elections.TDP’s strength grew to 15 when K.Srilakshmi, an independent ward member, joined the party.
On Monday, the newly elected ward members were to elect the chairman and vice-chairman.YSRCP’s total had risen to 15 with MLA Krishna Prasad able to vote as an ex-officio member.However, YSRCP members stalled Monday’s election on Monday due to Vijayawada MP not being able to vote.
The High Court granted Nani the right to vote, but will decide later on the validity of his vote.
YSRCP won 11 of the 13 urban local body elections.
TDP won Darsi municipality of Prakasam district, while Kondapalli was tied.
