K’taka Rain Losses: 24 Dead, 5L hectares of Crops Destroyed

Bengaluru 22 Nov : .24 people have died in the tragic events that followed heavy rains in Karnataka from September.In five lakh hectares of the state, agricultural crops have been destroyed by rains.
These were the key points from Sunday’s evening meeting, chaired at Krishna by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bammai, in which he reviewed the impact of incessant rainfall in different parts of the state.

Sources claim that the initial report of the damage stated that 658 homes were totally damaged while 8,495 were damaged partially.The incident also led to the deaths of 191 animals.

A total of 5 lakh hectares were destroyed by agricultural crop losses.The horticulture crop damage was estimated at 30,114 ha.The state has lost 2,203 km of roads due to the continuous rainfalls.

Damage to as many as 165 bridges is also possible.

Rains also caused severe damage to 1,225 schools buildings and 39 public health center (PHC), buildings located in different districts.According to the report, 1,674 electricity poles were damaged while 278 transformers also sustained damage.

Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagar, Hassan districts have suffered extensively.

A total of Rs 689 Crore has been provided to District Commissioners under the National Disaster Relief Fund.

Bommai, the Chief Minister, has promised additional funds to be allocated if needed.

All officers of the Agriculture department were given instructions to survey crop loss.Incessant rainfall in August and September caused crop damage on 3.43 million hectares.1.5 lakh farmers were also affected.Rs 130 crore was released to help them.The Chief Minister Bommai ordered the release of Rs.79 crore to compensate 79,000 farmers.

As the first relief package for people who have lost their homes, immediate action is required to release Rs 1 lakh per person.

The insurance companies have instructed officers to immediately disburse crop loss insurance amounts by taking action.Following the rainfall spell, orders were given to immediately take over road repairs.

Also, it was suggested that the government repair irrigation tanks while on war footing.For each zone within the BBMP limit for filling potholes, Rs 25 lakh will be released by government.

Instructions have been provided for the submission of ward-specific reports regarding damages to the BBMP limit.

The Home Guards and Civil Defence Force Teams are available to assist in rescue or relief operations.

The meeting gave officers instructions to increase their strength if needed.
