San Francisco, November 22nd : , Meta-owned Facebook Messenger & Instagram delay plans to encrypt messages of users until 2023.Antigone Davis from Meta, the head of safety and security, writes in The Telegraph that this delay is due to safety concerns.
Antigone Davis, a Telegraph writer wrote that “we are taking our time and will not complete the global rollout end-to-end encryption as default across all of our messaging services until sometime after 2023.”
“As an international company connecting billions of people and having developed industry-leading technology, it is determined to keep people safe online and protect their private communications.”
E2EE will only allow the recipient and sender to see each other’s conversations. This is to protect the platform from criminal activity.
Facebook first introduced encryption to Messenger in 2016.However, it is only possible when you use the Secret Conversation feature.
Meta stated earlier this year that default E2EE will be available in Messenger and Instagram “in 2022.”
Over the years, Facebook has been criticised for not implementing end-to-end encryption automatically on its platforms.
Meta also plans to integrate the infrastructure of the three messaging platforms, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Instagram Direct.
