United Nations, Nov 16, : .The Security Council extended the mandate for the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (“UNISFA”), the peacekeeping force that protects the disputed Abyei region, which straddles north and south Sudan until December 15, 2021.Unanimously adopting Resolution 2606 and acting under Chapter VII of the Charter of the US, the council reaffirmed all previous resolutions and presidential statements concerning the situation in Abyei and along the border between Sudan and South Sudan, underlining the importance of full compliance with and implementation of these, reports Xinhua news agency.The council unanimously adopted Resolution 2606, acting in accordance with Chapter VII of the Charter of the US.It also reaffirmed previous resolutions, presidential statements, and other relevant information regarding the Abyei area and the border region between Sudan and South Sudan.This underscores the need for full implementation and compliance, according to Xinhua news agency.

The UNISFA was set up by the Security Council in June 2011 in response to the renewed violence, escalating tensions and population displacement in the Abyei region as South Sudan was preparing to formally declare its independence from the Sudan — the culmination of a comprehensive 2005 peace agreement.In June 2011, the Security Council established the UNISFA to address the violence and displacement of people in Abyei, as South Sudan prepared to declare independence from Sudan.
