London 5 August : London, Aug 5 : One in eight adult (12.7 percent) who are affected with SARS-CoV-2 suffers long-term symptoms due to Covid-19 according to a huge Dutch research study, published in The Lancet.
The researchers found that many symptoms were either new or more severe for three to 5 months after receiving Covid-19, as compared to symptoms prior to a diagnosis of Covid-19 and to the group that was in control, suggesting these symptoms could be interpreted as the main signs of prolonged Covid.

The most prominent symptoms reported included chest pain, difficulty breathing as well as pain when breathing.

pain in the muscles losing of smell or taste sensations in the hands or feet as well as an ache in the throat, sensations of warm and cold, heavy hands or legs, and general fatigue.

The degree of the symptoms decreased to three months following the infection with no further decrease.

Other signs that didn’t increase in severity between three and five months following the diagnosis of Covid-19 included headache itchy eyes, dizziness nausea and back pain.

“These fundamental symptoms have significant implications for research in the future, since these symptoms can be used to differentiate between post-Covid-19 conditions and non-Covid-19-related issues,” Aranka Ballering, doctoral student at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

“Post-Covid-19 condition, also called Long Covid, is a critical issue with an increasing human cost.Understanding the primary symptoms and the frequency of post-Covid-19 in the general population is an important step in the ability of our team to design studies that will ultimately lead to effective healthcare interventions to the long-term manifestations of Covid-19,” Ballering said.

The study involved the participation of 76,422 people, of the which, 4,231 (5.5 percent) had Covid-19, and were matched to 8,462 control.

The participants were frequently required (24 times) to complete digital questionnaires on 23 signs commonly related with prolonged Covid between March 2020 and August 2021.

Of the participants in the study who had provided pre-Covid symptom information, the researchers discovered that 21.4 percent (381/1,782) of Covid-19-positive participants in comparison to 8.7 percent (361/4,130) of the control group, had at least one symptom that was more severe or moderate severity for three months or more following SARS-CoV-2 infection.

This means that in 12.7 percent of patients with Covid-19, their acute or severe symptoms three months after the Covid could be due to SARS-CoV-2 infections The researchers stated.
