Water Level In Rhine River Falls To Record Low

The water level in Rhine River falls to an all-time low

Berlin August 16 : The recurring heat waves in Europe are making the levels of water in the Rhine river to decrease, with a record low level of 2 centimeters recorded in Emmerich near the border of Germany with the Netherlands.
The rain forecast in the coming days will be “too small to bring about an ongoing improvement of the conditions on major rivers” A spokesperson of the German Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG) said to Xinhua the news agency on Monday.

The level of the water in Kaub located on the Middle Rhine, where the river is at its lowest is currently at 31 centimeters, which amounts to a channel’s width of just 1.43 meters.

For many kinds of ships, 40cm is already too deep as per the BfG.

Cargo and passenger vessels as well as ferry vessels have to contend with low levels of water on Europe’s most crowded waterway, the spokesperson said the spokesperson, adding that ships need to reduce their cargo in order to avoid grounding, and ferry vessels aren’t operating at all.

The restrictions are likely “remain in place in the coming weeks”, he added.

If the water levels at the Kaub monitoring station fall below the threshold of 78 cm over an amount of 30 days Germany’s industrial output could fall by around 1 cent, according to the German Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel) warned last week.

The restrictions on transport through the Rhine could “hit supply chains that were already stretched” According to IfW Vice President Stefan Kooths.

Inland shipping is an essential method of transportation for mineral oil and coal which are “at the core of several chain production processes”.

To ensure sufficient energy supply in this scenario rail transport must prioritise energy-related transports in accordance with an unpublished regulation from the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) and the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).

“We are in a period (now) where crises are interspersed,” Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck has said, speaking of the combination of continuous energy and water crises that are affecting Germany’s economy.
