Telangana : Supreme Court Dismisses BRS plea Over car-like Election Symbols

In a recent decision, the Supreme Court of India declined to support the BRS party in Telangana, ruling against their objection to the Election Commission of Indias choice of "Road Roller" as a symbol for the Yuga Tulasi Party.

The BRS had argued that the "Road Roller" symbol resembled their own symbol, which is a "Car.

" However, the Supreme Court dismissed the BRSs petition, emphasizing that Indian voters are capable of distinguishing between different symbols.Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Pankaj Mithal stated that they believe voters are not so uninformed as to be unable to tell the difference between a car and a road roller.

Justice Oka further expressed confidence that the "Car" symbol and the "Road Roller" symbol are noticeably distinct. He dismissed the idea that voters would be confused, even on Electronic Voting Machines.

Senior Advocate Meenakshi Aroras argument that the symbols might appear similar on the Electronic Voting Machine did not sway the court. When Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing BRS, presented the case, Justice Oka suggested that BRS was merely attempting to delay the election and advised them to approach the high court.

The bench noted that both parties involved were smaller political parties and acknowledged a delay in filing the plea. They asked, "You are a political party.

Where is the question of delay?" The plea was ultimately dismissed due to the delay, but the bench granted the BRS the freedom to approach the high court on the matter. The BRS had approached the Supreme Court seeking a directive to the ECI to avoid assigning symbols similar to their "Car" symbol for the November 30 Assembly election in Telangana.

Previously, the Delhi High Court had also declined to consider the BRSs plea on this issue. The BRS had argued that car-like symbols could lead to confusion among voters and potentially result in a loss of votes for the party. .
