Veere Di Wedding, a movie starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Swara Bhasker, and Shikha Talsania, celebrates its fifth anniversary today.Released in 2018, the film focused on a group of friends and explored the complexities of female friendships and womanhood.
On its first day, the movie earned more than Rs 10 crore at the box office, making it the highest-grossing opener for a women-centric film at that time.Recently, director Rhea Kapoor and the cast members expressed their joy on social media as they celebrated this milestone.
In an exclusive interview with a national media, Swara, who played the character of Sakshi, a bold and straightforward woman in Veere Di Wedding, reflects on the film’s impact.
According to her, Veere Di Wedding was an exceptionally remarkable and pioneering film, not only for herself but also for Bollywood.
It marked the first instance in the industry’s century-long history where a movie showcased four women in the leading roles, without a male hero, and the plot didn’t revolve around two women competing for the affections of the same man.
While male-led buddy films were common in Bollywood, Veere Di Wedding stood out by focusing on women and their friendships.
Swara clarifies that Veere Di Wedding enthusiastically embraced friendship from a female perspective, breaking away from the usual focus on male bonding in films about friendships. The movie presented four flawed heroines, each grappling with their unique challenges and uncertainties.
It established an environment where women were allowed to confront the struggles of adulthood and make mistakes, an aspect often reserved for male protagonists.
Moreover, the film depicted real women who, despite their fashionable appearance, had flaws and reminded the audience of themselves.Swara remarks, “Veere Di Wedding was a breath of fresh air, and the best part was its tremendous success at the box office, which paved the way for more such refreshing stories to be told!”
In the movie, Swara’s character, Sakshi, was already married but lived with her parents after leaving her husband’s home.It is worth noting that Veere Di Wedding was among the early feature films to depict a female actor engaging in self-pleasure.Swara faced criticism for this, but the film remains popular.
