Modi’s call for EVs came at a time when the electric two-wheeler market is under scrutiny for fire and explosions in batteries which have led to numerous government investigations.

In a recent webcast on “Make in India for the World The prime minister demanded that the industry tap new opportunities in areas like EVs and semiconductors.

“Aatmanirbharta is even more important when we view it through the lens of national security. The private sector has to be more vocal for local”,” he emphasised, soliciting the industry to boost the production of domestic goods in the electric vehicle industry.

At his most recent discussion with Suzuki Motor Corporation’s top adviser Osamu Suzuki in Tokyo, Modi discussed investment opportunities in India and the possibility of the establishment of manufacturing infrastructure for electric vehicles as well as batteries.

The premier has emphasized the fact that, by 2030 the Indian economy will reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent of the amount it was in 2005.

NITI Aayog has forecast that by 2030, more than 80 percent of the three-wheelers and two-wheelers, 40 percent of buses and 30 to 70 percent of automobiles will operate on electricity.

India’s move to an electric mobility system could save the country around 20 lakh crore by 2030, just on oil imports.
