‘Decentralizing power does not mean shifting of capitals’, this is what most of the rested politicians opined when YS Jagan announced Vishakhapatnam and Kurnool as capitals for the state of Andhra Pradesh.
YS Jagan’s decision drew criticism right from the word go, with many senior politicians bashing his idea of Three Capitals.
Meanwhile, the neighbouring state of Karnataka too has decentralized power.Instead of creating two or more capitals apart from Bangalore, the government there chose to shift nine key departments to other districts.
Few of these departments include HRC (Human Rights Commission), Irrigation, and Sugarcane Development. The decision taken by the ruling Karnataka government has become a slap on the face for YS Jagan’s Three Capitals idea.
It will be interesting to see whether YS Jagan will continue building Vishakhapatnam as Executive Capital, Kurnool as Judicial Capital, and Amaravati as Legislature capital. His decision to for Three Capitals is unilateral.
Though few YSRCP party members advised him not to go with the idea, their voice dissented, given their fear of YS Jagan.
