Maternity Leave is a privilege given to a working woman, Union Cabinet made changes to the existing Maternity Benefits Act 1961.Presently there are 12 weeks of grants for this leave and with the amendment of Maternity (Amendment) Bill 2016, woman are entitled for 26 weeks.
As per MB Act 1961, women employees are allowed to take full salary and its paid leaves to take care of mother and child.This law is also applicable to an organization with over 10 numbers of employees.
Also 12 weeks of Maternity Leave is granted for ‘Commissioning Mother’ (Mom and baby via surrogate) and Adopting Mother.
Union Labor Minister Bandaru Dattatreya introduced Factories (Amendment) 2016 in Lok Sabha which was approved by Cabinet.
This bill’s motto is to increase employment chances and business developments.Bill increases limit of overtime hours in factory workers from 50 to 100 hours.
Though there was resistance from Congress and Left parties resulting in their walkouts still NDA could succeed in passing the bill in Lok Sabha.
