Brussels 10th September : The ministers of energy of the European Union (EU) member states have endorsed a united position on temporary measures of emergency to reduce the cost of energy, as per senior officials. They have asked the European Commission to present “a solid and concrete proposal in the space of a couple of days,” Czech Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Sikela stated following the extraordinary Energy Council meeting in Brussels, Xinhua news agency reported.
“We will do everything we can to help our citizens as well as businesses that are struggling with rising energy costs,” he said.
Ministers identified four major areas in which states of the member states are expecting the Commission to take action in, including limiting the revenue of electricity producers who face low production costs as well as an eventual price limit on gas, steps to achieve an agreed-upon reduction in electricity demand across the EU and measures that could help solve the problem of reduced liquidity.
EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson told reporters following the conference that “There isn’t a single solution that can significantly reduce costs for energy and ensure the security of the energy we consume.”
“We have to continue our efforts and be determined on all fronts including diversification of sources as well as reducing demand and investing in renewable energy,” she said.
Simson stated that she said that the EU worked bilaterally with their trading partners in order to reach agreements on lower prices. She acknowledged that nothing had been yet decided, but she stated she was confident that “we will be presenting new actions in the coming weeks.”
The ministers are expected to meet again later in the month to debate and approve the final plan.
