Kohima : , Dec 30, 2013 – Just hours after the Union Home Ministry extended Nagaland’s Armed Forces Special Power Act to June 30, 2013, influential Naga civil societies organisations (CSOs), on Thursday, strongly opposed the extension. In a joint statement by the Konyak Union’s three wings, they declared that the “measure is a complete violation of human rights”.
The extension of AFSPA to other countries is a calculated move that diminishes the dignity and worth of human beings, while Konyaks cries for justice. The region is being labeled as troubled when the people of that area have utterly rejected violence and are yearning to find peace.
The statement was signed by S.Howing Konyak, President of Konyak Union and other leaders. It stated that “The integrity and strength of the nation can’t be achieved without peoples support and trust.”
According to the Konyak Naga, the act of extending the contract is an attempt at creating confusion among Konyak Naga society members at a time where emotions are high following the Mon incident, in which 14 civilians were murdered by the army under suspicion that they were terrorists.
The army contingent led by Major General visited Wednesday’s incident site.It left much to be desired. They were very disturbed by seeing the jawans accompanying the army contingent.”The Konyak community is not tolerant of the killings of victims in their immediate vicinity for more than a year.
According to the statement, peace and harmony can only be achieved if there’s a genuine effort to make contact with the people.AFSPA certainly is not the answer to such disharmony.
According to the Konyak Student Wing President Noklem Konyak and Ponglem Konyak of Konyak Women Wing, the Konyak Nagas long for integration and peace with India. However, it seems like India doesn’t care about that.
Konyaks make up one of 16 prominent tribes of Nagaland.More than 86 percent of Nagaland’s two million inhabitants are tribal members.
After the massacre of 14 and 30 people in Mon district, Nagaland on December 4, and 5, respectively, Konyak Union wings were among the many organizations that agitated to abolish the AFSPA in the northeastern region.
Several of Bharatiya Janata Party’s allies, including the National People’s Party of Meghalaya (NPP), headed by Conrad K.Sangma, and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura have been requesting that the AFSPA be removed from northeastern regions.
On December 20, the Nagaland Assembly unanimously resolved to repeal this Act.
Amit Shah, Union Home Minister met with Nagaland Chief Ministers as well as other Nagaland leaders on December 23rd.They formed a committee that would investigate the possibility of Nagaland losing AFSPA.
It was required to report within 45 days.
