In a comprehensive analysis of Telanganas current legislative landscape, a report released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) sheds light on the financial profiles, criminal records, and educational qualifications of the states MLAs.
A striking revelation shows that 90% of Telanganas current MLAs boast assets exceeding ₹13 crore, with an average wealth of ₹14.
11 crore for BRS members and ₹10.84 crore for AIMIM representatives.Among these, 106 out of 118 MLAs are millionaires, underlining the affluence that characterizes much of the states political leadership.
Regrettably, over 60% of these legislators have criminal cases against them.Of these, 44 face severe charges, including assault, murder, kidnapping, and rape.Such instances serve as a reminder of the challenges in our political system that need to be addressed. The BRS, with 101 MLAs, leads the tally, followed by AIMIM with seven, Congress with six, and BJP with two (plus one suspended).Independents make up the remaining two.The report also highlights that 61% of Telangana MLAs have criminal cases registered against them.BJPs T Raja Singh and M Bhupal Reddy, BRS Athram Sakku, CM K Chandrashekar Rao, Finance Minister T Harish Rao, Danam Nagender, and M Yadagiri Reddy are among those named in such cases.Out of the 118 MLAs, 69 hold at least a graduate degree, while 43 have educational qualifications ranging from classes 5 to 12.Five MLAs hold diplomas, and one considers themselves "just literate." In terms of age, 58% are aged between 30 and 50, while 64% fall between 51 and 80.Gender parity remains an area for improvement, with only six women (5%) among the 118 MLAs, underscoring the need for more inclusive representation. This report offers valuable insights into the composition of Telanganas legislative body, emphasizing the importance of transparency, accountability, and equitable representation in our democratic framework.
It calls for continued efforts to foster a political landscape that truly mirrors the diverse demographics and aspirations of the people it serves.
